The Auggies took a 36-32 lead at the break, but the Knights used a Drake three and Forkrud to pull within one, 40-39. Olson-Patterson scored on consecutive possessions and the Auggies held the Knights without a field goal for more than four minutes, building a 52-39 lead on another Olson-Patterson bucket.
Carleton rallied, pulling within five as Phillips and Drake drilled three-pointers and Forkrud scored on the fast break. An Anthony Baquero three-pointer put the Knights within three, 62-59, but the visitors responded with a Dan Graf jumper from the baseline as the Knights wouldn’t get any closer than four points the rest of the way.
The Auggies took the lead for good midway through the first half on consecutive three-pointers from Aaron Benesh. Carleton pulled within 31-30 on a Beste triple, but Gholson canned a jumper and Benesh cashed in on another long-range shot as the Knights failed to score a field goal in the final 3:30 of the half.
Carleton shot a measly 38 percent from the floor and the Auggies held a 14-7 edge in free-throw points, going 14-for-18 from the line to Carleton’s 7-of-10. The Auggies turned it over 13 times to Carleton’s 10.
The Knights return to action on Monday, Dec. 13, traveling to UW-La Crosse for a non-conference tilt with the Eagles. The Auggies return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 15, hosting North Central College (Minn.) at 7:30 p.m.
