Lewis and Clark 91, Cascade 90

PORTLAND, Ore. — (Men's Basketball, Dec. 7) The Lewis & Clark College Pioneers won a thriller at Pamplin on Tuesday night, taking down the Thunderbirds of Cascade College 91-90 in triple overtime. Travis Jones scored 37 points for the Pioneers. Tommy Magnuson had a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists.


The Pioneers led by one point at the end of the first half. The Pioneers opened the second half with a 14-3 run, giving them a 12-point lead. The Thunderbirds chipped away at the Pioneer, lead, tying the game 63-63 with 2:21 left in regulation. Trailing by two, Thomas Tillery got a rebound off a missed three-pointer by Cascade's Joshua Garrett, hit a layup out of a timeout with :42 seconds left on the clock to tie the game, and got another rebound with :07 seconds left on another miss by Garett to send the game to its first OT 65-65.


L&C 's Travis Jones dunked in the first four seconds of the overtime to put the Pioneers up two. The Pioneers led by five after a three-pointer by Jones. Cascade trailed by four with :15 seconds left. They tied the game on a layup by Malik Edwards and then a steal by Malik Edwards off the Pioneer inbounds pass and a jumper by Paul Hamilton.


In overtime two, the Pioneers led by as many as five, but Cascade forced the third overtime with a three-pointer by Jon Rylaarsdam. In the third overtime, it was Cascade with the four-point advantage. Travis Jones hit a jumper to cut it to two. After an Adam Merino freethrow, Cascade led by one. With :19 seconds left, Thomas Tillery stole the ball from Malik Edwards and went down the court for a layup. With less than a second left, Cascade's Joshua Garret was fouled and went to the line. He missed both shots, giving the Pioneers the 91-90 victory.


Travis Jones had 37 points for the Pioneers, going 8-for-13 from beyond the arc. He had two assists, a block, and a steal as well as four rebounds. Tommy Magnuson had seventeen points, fourteen rebounds, and 11 assists. It was the first triple-double by a Pioneer in at least the past five seasons. It was only the second time in the past five years that a Pioneer logged double-digit assists in a game. Thomas Tillery ended with 10 points , four rebounds, five steals, and seven assists.

For Cascade, two Thunderbirds ended the night with double-doubles. Paul Hamilton had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Sean Palmer had 16 points and 10 boards. Malik Edwards scored 20 points with eight rebounds coming off the bench.
