Marymount 67, Gallaudet 58

WASHINGTON, DC — The Gallaudet University men’s basketball team was stunned by visiting CAC foe Marymount University, 67-58, Tuesday night at the Fieldhouse. The Bison led by as much as 12 points in the first half, but poor free throw shooting in the second stanza helped the Saints rally to the win.

Gallaudet charged out of the gate to take a 14-7 lead when junior forward Cy Saunders nailed a trifecta from the left wing 7:16 into the contest. They extended the advantage to 30-18 when junior forward Frank Jackson – who finished with a team-high 16 points – drove baseline for a nifty right-handed scoop. However, Marymount retaliated with a 12-2 run, cutting the deficit to 32-30 at the break.

The Saints applied defensive pressure in the second half and seized a 38-36 lead when rookie guard Brandon Palmer hit a running one-hander from inside the paint. The Bison answered immediately, regaining the advantage and extending it to 43-38 when freshman guard Sekoe White knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner. Shortly thereafter, the visitors countered with another flurry to grab a 58-56 lead with just under three minutes left. Marymount capitalized on its free throw opportunities down the stretch, while the Bison struggled, rounding the scoring out at 67-58.

Junior forward Robert Haney Jr. notched 11 points, 12 boards and six dimes for the Bison, while White chipped in with 12 points. Senior forward Ed Carrai paced the Saints with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, while rookie guard Evan Martin added eight points. With the loss, Gallaudet drops to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while Marymount improves to 4-2 and 2-1.

The Bison return to action at non-league foe Wesley College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
