Sophomore guard MELISSA KRAFT (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill Academy) scored a game-high 19 points, including 14 in the first half, and was the only player in double figures for either team as Drew University took the lead with 9:36 to go in the first half and never trailed again, defeating New Jersey City University, 57-38 in a non-conference game. Drew improves to 5-1 overall, while NJCU falls to 2-4.
NJCU limited its turnovers to 19 in the game, but struggled from the field, shooting just 25 percent (13-of-52), and 1-of-18 (.056) from three point range. Drew connected on 39.7 percent of its shots (23-of-58), and possessed a 32-16 margin in points in the paint, while out-rebounding the Gothic Knights, 49-32.
Kraft hit 8-of-17 shots and added five rebounds. Senior forward MELISSA COOVER (Columbus, NJ/North Burlington) contributed nine points and nine rebounds (eight defensive), while senior forward LAUREN DUBEK (Kenvil, NJ/Morris Catholic) used her 6-foot-0 frame to seize a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive). Senior guard SARAH MARQUEZ (Orono, ME/Orono) had nine points and three steals.
Two players scored nine points for NJCU, led by junior power forward MEGAN KABBA (Newark, NJ/Arts), on 4-of-9 shooting. She chipped in five rebounds and two blocks. Freshman center ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) scored nine on 4-of-10.
Junior forward MONCIA LYKES (Piscataway, NJ/High Tech) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds (six defensive), with five points and two blocks. Sophomore point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) had six points and five steals, but shot 1-of-7 and committed six turnovers.
NJCU led 9-8 before a 7-0 run gave the Rangers a 15-9 lead to stay with 9:36 left in the opening period. With 5:33 remaining in the stanza, the Drew lead was 20-13, led by Kraft who had 14 points at that juncture. She helped the Rangers build a 25-16 halftime advantage.
Three times in the second half NJCU whittled the deficit to nine, but Drew responded each time. The Rangers largest lead was 21 at three stages of the second half.
NJCU will return to action on Saturday, December 11 at 12pm when it faces the New York City College of Technology in a neutral game at the City College of New York in New York, NY. The game is part of the annual NJAC/CUNYAC challenge.
