Union vs. Vassar Jan 30
BROOKLYN, NY — Vassar's men's basketball team got double figures scoring performances from Will Byrne, Judson Winton and William Kieffer and the Brewers' outside shooting returned to form, but Sunday's game against NYC College of Technology may be remembered for a last second shot that fell short. Union vs. Vassar Jan 30
At NYC College of Technology's Klitgord Center, drama ruled the afternoon when Tech
had a chane to tie the score with two seconds left. An inbounds pass from Tech's Shacun Malave to Jason Senior, following a timeout with eight seconds to play, resulted in a shot that bounded off the rim.
With the win, Vassar heads into the semester break with a 4-3 record. The Brewers will next play on Saturday, January 8 at Delaware Valley and return home to the New Athletic Center on Monday, January 10 against SUNY-Purchase at 7:00 pm.
Vassar came from behind on the host team. The Brewers trailed at intermission 33-28, and a torrid second half shooting performance made the difference. The Brewers shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the field and 50 percent (5-10) from behind the arc. Four of Vassar's seven three-pointers came from Byrne (Chelmsford, MA/Concord Academy), who was 4 of 6 from three-point range. Three other trifecta's came from senior guard Seth Taft (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends).
Byrne played the entire 40 minutes and had only one turnover to go along with six rebounds in one of his best games of the season.
At the start of the second half, Vassar gradually cut away at Tech's lead. A layup by Winton (San Francisco, CA/University) with 14:52 to play gave Vassar a 40-39 lead and two subsequent baskets by Kieffer (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greely) and Byrne increased the lead to 44-39.
Tech was not finished and regained the lead at 53-52 with 9:52 to play. Vassar withstood the challenge and built a 66-58 lead on a tip-in by sophomore forward Evan Hannay (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow), the first of two big tips by the forward. Hannay's second tip-in with 1:17 to play extended Vassar's lead to 68-65.
Two huge free-throws by freshman guard Daniel Forcella (Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) with :44 to play stretched a precarious lead to 70-65. Tech's Jason Senior narrowed the lead to 70-68 with 14 seconds to play. Following a Forcella turnover with eight seconds to play, Tech called timeout for the last play, Senior's shot that bounded off the rim.
In an evenly played statistical game, Vassar was outrebounded by a slight 30-28 margin. Freshman Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, CT/Southington), Vassar's leading rebounder, led the Brewers with seven boards.
Tech (3-1) got a huge afternoon from Shacun Malave with 24 points and 13 rebounds and Senior, who had 22 points.
