William Paterson 59, Richard Stockton 54

WAYNE, NJ — WAYNE, NJ (Dec. 4) – Sophomore forward Luis Martinez (Passaic, NJ/Clifton) hit the go-ahead jumper with 3:44 left and freshman guard Jason Cameron (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) hit all four of his free-throw attempts in the final 17.2 seconds as William Paterson outlasted Richard Stockton, 59-54, in New Jersey Athletic Conference men’s basketball action Saturday at the Rec Center.

Martinez’ go-ahead shot was a 12-footer from straightaway that gave the Pioneers (4-1, 2-1 NJAC) a 50-49 lead and enabled them to win their third consecutive contest. Senior guard Robert Sullivan (Maplewood, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds, including a key three-point play with 2:18 remaining that made the score 53-49.

Junior forward Nick Torres (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) added a career-high 11 points in the win for William Paterson.

Junior forward Sid Jackson (Brooklyn, NY/Liberty County) led the Ospreys (3-3, 1-2 NJAC), who had four double-digit scorers, with 14 points. Classmate Tobias Smith (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) added 12 and eight rebounds.

In a defensive struggle – Richard Stockton shot 34.8 percent (16 of 46), William Paterson 34.3 percent (23 of 67) – the Ospreys led 25-24 at halftime. They overcame a 41-32 second-half deficit when Jackson nailed a free throw with 4:01 remaining to give his team a short-lived 49-48 advantage.

Freshman guard Mario Lancioni (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) added 11 points and senior guard Jose Rodriguez (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) dropped in 10 for Stockton. The Ospreys’ leading scorer this season, senior center Brian Hiltner (Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit), was held to seven points on 2-for-13 shooting and seven rebounds.

William Paterson, which owned a 44-37 rebounding edge, got eight points and eight rebounds from junior guard Feron McGee (Neptune, NJ/Neptune).

The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, Dec. 8, when they travel to Rutgers-Newark for an 8 p.m. tip-off. Richard Stockton travels to Catholic for a non-conference contest on the same day and time.
