The Beacons, 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference, outscored the Colonials, 18-11 in the extra frame including six points from Tony Barros (Dorchester, MA). The senior guard finished with a game-high 28 points off the bench.
The game was tied 11 times in regulation.
WestConn guard Jay Reginatto (Torrington, CT) game the Colonials an 86-84 lead with a three point basket with 19 seconds remaining. Earlier in the first half, Reginatto became WestConn’s 22nd men’s basketball player to score 1,000 points. He finished with 13 points and a team-high six points.
UMass Boston’s Roger Perry (Roxbury, MA), who earlier joined Reginatto in the coveted 1,000 point club, tied the game with two free-throws with three seconds remaining in regulation.
Perry opened the overtime with a three pointer a long jumper to give the Beacons a lead that would not be threatened.
Kimani Crawford (West Hartford, CT) led WestConn, now 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the league, with 25 points on 9 of 12 shooting from the field.
Greg Cole (Terrytown, NY) had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Colonials.
Brice Assie (Bridgeport, CT) added 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
The Colonials had an 11-point lead five minutes into the game but the Beacons chipped away to cut the deficit to 44-43 at intermission.
WestConn hosts Southern Maine here next Saturday. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m. following the women’s tip at 1 pm.
