WU followed up its school-record performance of 16 three-pointers on Friday night with 12 on Saturday in the first meeting between the two teams in 21 years. Washington U. won the last meeting between the two teams, a 64-32 win in 1983.
The Bears continued its hot shooting from beyond the arc as WU connected on back-to-back three-pointers to open the game with a 6-2 lead. Principia built an early 15-13 lead, but senior Michael Faherty scored five of the Bears next eight points to give WU the 21-15 lead with 13:24 remaining.
Washington University, which had a 13-3 advantage in fouls in the first half, gained its last lead (28-27) of the half after a dunk by senior Anthony Hollins at the 7:43 mark. Principia led the rest of the way as they connected on 13-of-16 free-throws in the first half and took a 43-39 lead to the locker room.
Faherty finished with 13 points in the first half, including a put-back at the buzzer. Sam Gilman led Principia with 15 first-half points.
Hollins gave the Bears the lead at 50-47 with 15:15 left after he scored on an alley-oop dunk from junior Scott Stone. Junior Calvin Williams followed that up with a deep three-pointer from the corner and added a break-away dunk to give WU a 60-51 lead with 10:39 left.
The Bears put the game out of reach with three-pointers by Williams and junior Mike Grunst as WU took an 81-67 lead with 4:10 remaining.
Faherty led five Bears in double figures with 15 points. Grunst scored 14 points while Hollins and Williams added 12. Stone rounded out the double figure scoring with 11 points and six assists. Sam Gilman led Principia (2-4) with 17 points.
Washington University (4-3) returns to action Wed., Dec. 8 at Webster University. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
