Brian McEvily posted 16 points, while Mike McGarvey chipped in with 12 points, a season-high nine assists and five steals to help the Bears (3-2, 1-0 CC) capture their first conference win.
Matt Gustafson, who leads the conference in scoring (31.0 ppg), recorded 20 points and nine rebounds to pace the Garnet (1-5, 0-1 CC). Three other players scored in double digits, including Ian
McCormick with 14 points.
Ursinus shot 93 percent from the charity stripe, hitting 12 of 13 free throws in the second half of its conference opener.
Swarthmore scored the first two points of the game, but McEvily drained a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 run to build a 10-2 Bear lead. Matt Fabian posted eight of his 12 points in a four minute, 20 second span to help Ursinus take a 24-12 lead at 10:22.
A trey by Gustafson and a Dillon McGrew jumper cut the lead to nine on two occasions. Furey completed a three-point play at 4:43 to give the Bears their biggest advantage at 36-21. A fast-break lay-up by Bret Jenkins on a pass from McGarvey helped the home squad take a 40-29 lead into the locker room.
Ursinus scored 20 of its 42 points in the paint in the second half, including a lay-up from Naquan Williams for a 17-point lead at 53-38 with 13:35 to play.
Gustafson hit a jumper to get the Garnet within 11 at 5:57, but the Bears kept a double-digit cushion making 4 of 7 shots from the floor and connecting on 5 of 6 free throws to close out the half.
Fabian finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while McGrew and Matt Kurman added 12 points for Swarthmore.
Prior to the game, 2004 graduate and former basketball standout Dennis Stanton was honored with the retiring of the #20 jersey.
Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday at Washington (Md.). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
