Thomas More 102, Mount St. Joseph 99

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky — Sophomore guard Garry Horton (Louisville/Pleasure Ridge Park) calmly sank two free throws with 1 second remaining in the game to preserve a 102-99 win Saturday over cross state-rival Mount St. Joseph at Connor Convocation Center in a game that saw 24 ties and 21 lead changes.

Two different pressure packed situations sent the game into the overtimes.

With five seconds remaining in regulation, senior Chad Wachs (Park Hills/Covington Catholic) rebounded a missed free throw and got it ahead to junior Andrae Woodard, pictured at right, (Allensville/Todd County Central). Woodard sliced through the defense and connected on a running lay-up as time expired.

At the end of the first overtime, a questionable foul call sent the Lions to the free throw line with a chance to win the game with no time on the clock. After making the first two from the charity stripe to knot the game at 92, the third free throw was missed - sending the game into a second overtime session.

With a Woodard lay-up 40 seconds into the second overtime, the Saints had a lead they would relinquish. On several occasions, MSJ got the lead down to one, only to have the Saints answer with a basket or big defensive stop.
The game started slow for the Saints as the Lions raced to a quick 9-2, forcing a TMC timeout.

Following the timeout, Woodard nailed a three and Wachs connected on back-to-back layups sparked a 17-5 spurt that gave Thomas More a five-point advantage. Neither team was able to get on a run to pull away as they first had 11 ties and eight lead changes.

However, going into the half - the Mount led, 43-40.

The second half was equally as close as the largest lead for either team was four points.

Woodard finished the game with 21 points, with nine rebounds and seven assists - both career-highs.

Junior R.K. Thurman (Portsmouth/Portsmouth) turned in his second consecutive solid performance with 19 points and seven rebounds. Wachs had 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Jered Ferguson finished with 10 points and seven boards.

Thomas More (3-2) will have a week off before travel to Danville to face Centre on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m.
