Salve Regina 55, Gordon 47

NEWPORT, R.I. — Three-time defending Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) champion Salve Regina University women's basketball overcame a nine-point first-half deficit to defeat Gordon College, 55-47, today in the league opener for both teams at the Rodgers Recreation Center.

Gordon scored the first eight points of the game. Forward Sarah DeLuca [SR/ Gray, Maine] swished a free throw with four minutes remaining in the first half to give the Fighting Scots their largest lead of the game (23-14). That free throw also put DeLuca in first place on her school's all-time leading scorer list, now ahead of current assistant coach Amy Bowen '98.

DeLuca now has 1,446 career points, but the Seahawks held her nine under her season scoring average (21.5). Following DeLuca's record-setting free throw, Salve Regina enjoyed an 8-0 run keyed by a pair of three-pointers from Meaghan Stapleton [JR/ West Nyack, N.Y.].

There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the contest, all coming in the second half. A Margaret O'Brien [SO/ Canton, Mass.] free throw brought Salve Regina even for the first time, 45 seconds into the second half. A pair of free throws by O'Brien with 6:09 left in the game gave Salve Regina its final tie. Lindsay Frederick [JR/ Danvers, Mass.] sank a pair of free throws a minute later and the Seahawks led the rest of the way.

Frederick finished with a game-high 17 points while she and Jennifer Leahy [JR/ Cresskill, N.J.] each grabbed nine boards. Salve Regina (2-2; 1-0 CCC) plays at Anna Maria on Tuesday, December 7, while Gordon (0-5; 0-1 CCC) looks for its first win of the season hosting Endicott.
