Salve Regina 72, Gordon 51

NEWPORT, R.I. — Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated Gordon College, 72-51, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener for both schools at the Rodgers Recreation Center in Newport, Rhode Island.

Gordon led 14-10 before Chris Collier's [SR/Exeter, N.H.] lay-up with 14:00 remaining in the first half ignited a 12-0 Seahawk run. Jon Hazzard [SO/ North Kingstown, R.I.], Jay Pallotti [FR/ Rocky Hill, Conn.], Andrew Rego [FR/ Little Compton, R.I.], and Matt Smolensky [JR/ New York, N.Y.] each connected from behind the arc as Salve Regina built a 14-point halftime lead (38-24).

Gordon opened the second half with six straight points on three lay-ups, two by Mike Herr [SO/ Lampeter, Pa.]. Collier answered with another lay-up at 18:17 before Smolensky had a pair of lay-ups sandwiched around a three-pointer. Salve Regina enjoyed its largest lead of the game (67-40 with 6:33 left) after a Matt Grendal [SO/ Foxboro, Mass.] lay-up.

Nine Seahawks scored points led by Collier (15), Smolensky (14), and Rego (12). Grendal had a game-high four assists with six points. Jon Marstaller [FR/ Naples, Maine] led the Scots with 14 points while Jerry Logan [SO/ Marietta, Ga.] and Herr each scored 11 points.

Gordon (4-2; 0-1 CCC) drops its second straight game. Salve Regina (3-3; 1-0 CCC) plays at Anna Maria next Tuesday, December 7 while the Scots host defending conference champion Endicott College.
