Leading the Yellow Jackets was junior forward Justin Wansley, with game-highs of 24 points, 15 rebounds, and five steals. He shot 11-for-17 (64.7%) from the floor and was 2-for-3 (66.7%) at the foul line. Wansley pulled down 10 of his rebounds at the defensive end of the court. Also for Randolph-Macon, sophomore forward Philip Hawley totaled 12 points on 4-of-5 (80.0%) shooting.
Washington and Lee was ahead for much of the first half. The biggest advantage for the visitors was 10 points, 24-14 a little over halfway through the period. The Generals took a 36-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Generals continued to lead for about the first 10 minutes of the second half. With 8:43 remaining, Randolph-Macon senior guard Justin Moyer nailed a three-point field goal to put his team up for the first time in the contest, 51-50. Washington and Lee senior guard Mike Stuart answered with a three-pointer, assisted by sophomore guard Chris Halkitis, and the visitors were ahead 53-51. Randolph-Macon’s Wansley slammed home a dunk off an assist by Moyer to tie the score at 53-53. Moyer followed that with a layup, assisted by sophomore guard Loren Sisson, and the Yellow Jackets would not trail again.
Following the performances by Wansley and Hawley, Randolph-Macon’s Moyer added nine points on 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting, and a career and game-high 10 assists. Junior guard Patrick Gill contributed with eight points and five rebounds. Senior forward Geoff Gunther came off the bench and pulled down six rebounds in 11 minutes.
For Washington and Lee, Stuart and Halkitis both shot 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the floor, each scoring 16 points. Stuart made 3-of-5 (60.0%) three-point attempts, while Halkitis was 4-for-7 (57.1%) from behind the three-point line. Freshman forward Greg Bienemann totaled 10 points on 4-of-8 (50.0%) shooting in 28 minutes off the bench. He also made 2-of-3 (66.7%) foul shots. Fellow freshman forward Femi Kusimo added nine points and five rebounds. He was 5-for-6 (83.3%) at the free throw line. Freshman forward Colton Braud distributed a team-high five assists.
