New Jersey City University head men’s coach CHARLES BROWN recorded the 430th victory of his 23-year career to move into sole possession of third place among the winningest men’s basketball coaches in state history as his Gothic Knights sailed past St. Joseph’s College-Patchogue, 76-62, in a non-conference game at the Athletic and Fitness Center.
NJCU wins its second straight game to improve to 4-2 overall, and 2-0 all-time in this series. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles (2-3).
Brown broke a tie with his former college head coach, Ollie Gelston, who won 429 games at then-Jersey City State (1960-67) and then-Montclair State College (1968-1991). NJCU’s next victory will tie Brown with former New Jersey Institute of Technology coach James Catalano, also a JCSC graduate, who captured 431 victories from 1980-2001, for second place in state history.
In a season where NJCU has basically had a new high scorer every game, freshman shooting guard NAMREH WHITE (Plainfield, NJ/Smith, NC) tallied 15 points (6-of-12 FG, 3-of-7 3FG) and sank three three-pointers to become the fifth different Gothic Knight to lead the team in scoring this year. He added six rebounds.
Sophomore forward DEVIN DAVIS (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) nearly had his fourth double-double of the year, notching 10 points (5-of-8), nine rebounds (six offensive) and five blocks in 25 minutes. He now has 22 blocks in six games, for a 3.67 per game average.
Senior guard JAVIER RODRIGUEZ (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) also had 10 points, seven assists, six defensive rebounds, and three steals. Junior center JAMES KAISER (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds (six offensive), and scored six points in 18 reserve minutes.
Freshman guard RAJAHN JONES (Roselle, NJ/Pocono Mountain, PA) and senior forward CHRISTOPHER KATES (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) each scored nine points; Jones drilled three treys and dished five assists.
Three players reached double digits on the scoreboard for the Eagles, led by freshman guard PHIL LIPARI (Massapequa, NY/ Massapequa) with 14 points and seven rebounds (six defensive).
However, he shot 4-of-13 and committed eight of SJC’s 24 turnovers.
Junior guard PATRICK EAGAN (Mineola, NY/St. Mary’s) had 12 points and five assists for the Eagles, while junior forward LIONEL WATLINGTON (Amityville, NY/Amityville) had 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard RICHARD HENDERSON (Bellrose, NY/St. Francis Prep) contributed seven rebounds and six assists.
NJCU shot 37.7 percent from the field (26-of-69) and 32.1 percent from three-point range, but connected on nine treys (9-of-28). St. Joe’s hit 21-of-54 from the field (.384). NJCU out-rebounded its opponents, 53-40, including 21-12 on the offensive glass, which helped the Knights to a 16-6 margin in second chance points. NJCU’s bench also outscored the visitors reserves, 33-14.
After the game was tied at 21-21 with 6:59 left in the first period, NJCU went on a 10-3 run, capped by a Kates three to pull in front 31-24, before heading to the break up by eight, 39-31. NJCU’s largest lead was 20 points, 63-43, with 7:43 remaining.
NJCU next sees action on Wednesday, December 8 at 8pm with a non-conference game in Williamsport, PA against Lycoming College. It will be the first meeting between the teams since the Knights ousted Lycoming in last year’s NCAA Division III Tournament Second Round, 74-67, in Jersey City.
