The Hornets led by five at the break, but Guilford built a 13 point lead midway into the second half. LC would chip away at the lead, and finally overtook the Quakers with 1:27 on the clock thanks to a Matt Sweeney (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) lay-up. Guilford’s Kevin Smith would tie the game with 30 seconds remaining, and the score remained locked at 72 going at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, Guilford jumped out to a four-point advantage with two buckets by Genero Lawhorn. On the next possession, Sweeney converted on a four-point play to tie the game at 76. Pehanick scored the next four points, and the Hornets held on from the free throw line.
Sweeney scored 21 points for the Hornets, while Andy Albright (Hudson, OH/Hudson) and Todd Crown (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Kevin Smith was the leading scorer with 18 for Guilford (2-3/0-1 ODAC), and Lawhorn finishing with 16 points and nine boards. Lynchburg was outrebounded 43-34, but LC caused 27 turnovers in the winning effort.
LC (3-4/1-1 ODAC) will be in action again this upcoming Wednesday taking on Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Hampden-Sydney College from Turner Gymnasium. Game time set for 7 p.m.
