Dickinson 67, Johns Hopkins 64

BALTIMORE, Md. — Brad Litchfield scored 20 points and was one of four Red Devils in double figures as Dickinson defeated Johns Hopkins 67-64 in a Centennial Conference men's basketball game at Goldfarb Gymnasium. Freshman Terrence Coppola scored 22 points including five three-pointers in the loss for the Blue Jays, who fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Dickinson improved to 3-2, 1-0 in the CC.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively and Dickinson built a 16-8 lead with 8:19 remaining in the first half before Johns Hopkins rallied. Coppola scored 10 points off perfect shooting - 3 for 3 from the field, 2 for 2 behind the arc, and 2 for 2 from the foul line - all in the final eight minutes. A Coppola three-pointer at 3:21 put Hopkins ahead 19-18 for its first lead since a 2-0 start, and the Blue Jays entered the break trailing by just one, 25-24.

Johns Hopkins shot 9 for 21 (.429) in the first half, Dickinson was 9 for 26 (.346), and both teams combined for just 3-for-15 (.200) shooting from long range. Brad Litchfield (10 points) was one of just four Red Devils to score in the first period, while seven Hopkins players had two points apiece. The Blue Jays out-rebounded the Red Devils 20-11 but committed 15 early turnovers.

In the second half, Dickinson quickly increased its lead to seven points with back-to-back threes, and led by as many as 11 points, 53-42 with 8:29 remaining. The Red Devils were ahead 61-52 with 3:51 to play before the Blue Jays staged a comeback. Coppola nailed a free throw and his fifth three-pointer of the night, bringing Hopkins within five, 61-56.

After Johns Hopkins fouled twice to stop the clock and Dickinson hit 3 of 4 from the line, senior Eric Toback stuck two threes in 16 seconds to make it a one possession game. The Blue Jays trailed 64-62 with 23 seconds remaining. Toback was forced to commit his fifth foul and Dickinson's Matt Keys sealed the win with three free throws in the final 20 seconds.

Toback finished with 14 points for the Blue Jays while Jon Skvarka, Keys and Jimmy Martelli scored 14, 13 and 10 points respectively for the Red Devils.

Johns Hopkins returns to action at Swarthmore this Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
