John Jay 60, Vassar 53

NEW YORK — John Jay College ovecame a 29-26 halftime and used strong shooting from both the field and free throw line to defeat Vassar's men's basketball team, 60-53, Friday night.

The Bloodhounds (2-4) shot 55 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the free throw line in the second half and outscored the Brewers 34-24 over the final 20 minutes.

Vassar (3-3)had built a five point lead at 36-31 with 16:56 to play in the second half, but John Jay was able to tie the game at 38-38 with 12:34 remaining on a three-pointer by James Clark, two free throws by Jon Polanco and a jumper by Aramis Ramos. John Jay increased the lead to 50-46 before two free throws by Judson Winton (San Franciso, CA/University) and a three-pointer by senior Seth Taft (Philadelphia, PA/Abington Friends) gave Vassar a 51-50 lead.

Vassar would lead only once more, 53-52 on a layup by Winton with 4:38 to play. John Jay went on a 10-0 run to end the game, the key points coming from Polanco, who was fouled converting his own missed shot at 3:15 to play. Those points gave John Jay a 55-53 lead. The Bloodhounds got a big dunk from Paul Arthur to extend the lad to 57-53.

In attempts to close the gap, the Brewers missed three 3-point attempts in the final 1:36.

John Jay placed three places in double figures, James Clark (19), Sharod Tomlinson (11) and Polanco (10), while Winton led Vassar in scoring for the second straight game with 17 points. Backcourt mate Will Byrne (Chelmsford, MA/Concord Academy) finished with 12 pooints. The teams were even on the boards at 24 each.

In its final game before semester break, Vassar places at New York Tech on Sunday, December 5, at 2:00 pm.
