Goucher 72, Gallaudet 62

TOWSON, Md. — After allowing a 17-point lead in the second half to shrink to three points with 2:33 remaining, Goucher outscored Gallaudet, 9-2, down the stretch to come away with a 72-62 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the Bison tonight.

Garrett Smith scored the first seven points of the decisive run, getting it started with a three-point play that extended the Gophers' lead to 66-60 with 2:28 left to play. The senior forward/center, who is averaging 21.8 points per game, finished with 17 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

The leading scorer for the Gophers (3-1, 2-0 CAC) was sophomore guard James Russo. He was 6-for-10 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, as he tallied 18 points in the first half. He added only two more points in the second half, but that was still enough for the first 20-point effort of his career.

Jermaine Saunders and Jonathan Garritt supplied the Gophers with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Frank Jackson was the leading scorer and rebounder for Gallaudet (3-4, 0-3 CAC) as he knocked down 17 points and grabbed 12 boards.

Russo nailed three of his three-point field goals during a 17-6 run by the Gophers to start the game. The Bison had fought back to get within 30-28 late in the first half when Russo landed his final shot from three-point range. At the half, Goucher enjoyed a 34-29 lead.

Russo's only basket of the second half provided the Gophers with their biggest lead of the contest at 48-31 with 15:17 left to play.
