Edgewood 76, Milwaukee Engineering 68

MADISON, Wis. — Led by four players scoring in double figures, the Edgewood College men’s basketball team defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday, 76-68, in the Lake Michigan Conference opener for both teams from the Todd Wehr Edgedome.

The Eagles (3-2, 1-0 LMC) were led by freshman Charlie Averkamp, who scored 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including a pair of three-point baskets. Junior Seth Cooper added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while David Michalkiewicz and Greg Blaska followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Kyle Scott’s short jumper with 33 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Eagles a 35-31 lead at halftime. Scott finished with nine points. Edgewood led by as many as 14 points on a few occasions in the second half of play. However, a pair of three-point baskets by MSOE’s Robert Verdun and Jorone Taylor-Lewis highlighted a 10-1 run by the Raiders, who got within five points, 73-68, with 19 seconds left to play.

The Eagles held on by hitting their free throws at the end. Edgewood went to the line a total of 15 times in the second half, compared to just twice in the first period.

MSOE (2-3, 0-1) was led by junior guard Jeff Mikos, who scored 22 points on an impressive 8-of-9 shooting effort. Mikos also tallied seven rebounds and four steals, which were both team-highs. Scott Murphy added 12 points and Taylor-Lewis scored 11.

Edgewood College will play at Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Tip-off versus the Crusaders is scheduled for 8 p.m. in Watertown, Wis.
