Calvin 83, Carthage 82

WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (3-2, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 21st in the November 30 “D3hoops.com” pool, lost to Calvin College (5-3), 83-82 in overtime, on Saturday, December 4 at the inaugural CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at Wheaton College’s King Arena in Wheaton, Ill. In Saturday’s second game, Wheaton (Ill., 6-0) defeated Hope College (1-4) by a 76-57 margin. On Friday, December 3, Carthage defeated Hope (1-3), 70-65, while Wheaton (Ill., 5-0) edged Calvin (4-3), 91-87 in overtime. In Carthage’s loss to Calvin on Saturday, the Knights went up by 15 points in the first half, 36-21, at 1:25 before the Redmen cut the lead to seven points at halftime, 39-32. Calvin went back up by 10 points on two occasions early in the second half. Carthage got the lead reduced to four points, 53-49, at 10:22 before the Knights opened a three different nine-point leads, the last at 62-53 at 7:52. Carthage took a one-point lead, 65-64, at 4:40, fell behind again and took a 71-69 lead with 2:07 remaining in regulation. Calvin’s Dan Aultman connected on a jumper with 13 seconds to play to send the game into overtime at 71-71. A three-pointer by the Redmen’s Keena Johnson with 10 seconds to play in overtime gave Carthage its last lead at 82-81. Kyle Trewhella hit a jumper for Calvin with five seconds to play to give the Knights their 83-82 margin. The Redmen shot just 36 percent for the game (19-63), while Calvin shot 50 percent (27-54). Keena Johnson scored a career-high 28 points on seven-of-11 field goals and 13-of-17 free throws. Kevin Menard had 20 points on seven-of-25 field goals, including four-of-12 from three-point range. Dan Aultman had 20 points and seven rebounds for Calvin. Carthage travels to Waukesha, Wis., on Thursday, December 9 (7 p.m.) to play non-conference opponent Carroll College (Wis.) at Van Male Arena.
