Cortland State 95, SUNYIT 79

UTICA, N.Y. — Junior Brian Kirchhoff (Webster) and senior Justin O'Garrow (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber) each scored 21 points as Cortland defeated host SUNYIT, 95-79, for its third straight victory. The Red Dragons are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC play. The Wildcats are 1-3 and 0-2.

Kirchhoff made 6-of-7 shots from three-point range, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and shared the team assist lead with O'Garrow at four apiece. Kirchhoff and O'Garrow each shot 7-for-10 from the floor. Sophomore Rod Headley (Peekskill) added 13 points and five rebounds and freshman Michael Jankiewicz (Oriskany) scored 10 points off the bench.

Nick Grimmer (New Hartford) led SUNYIT with 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Rich Phillips (Yorktown Heights/Morrisville St.) scored 16 points, Chantal Bien-Ame (Nyack/Rockland CC) added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists and Jason McCleod (Port St. Lucie, FL/North Country CC) chipped in with 10 points.

Cortland shot 54 percent from the field, including 53 percent (10-of-19) from three-point range. The Red Dragons made 60 percent of their shots (15-of-25) in the second half. Cortland also shot 79 percent from the foul line – 90 percent (17-of-19) in the second half.

Kirchhoff scored 18 first-half points as the Red Dragons took a 46-39 halftime lead. Cortland took a 26-9 lead seven minutes, 45 seconds into the game, fueled by 12 Kirchhoff points, and led by 18 at 33-15 with 8:23 left. The Wildcats mounted a 14-0 run over the next 2:41 to reduce Cortland's lead to four points. Josiah Talbot (Port Leyden/South Lewis) scored eight of those points, including two treys.

SUNYIT tied the game at 37-37 with 3:43 left in the half on Bien-Ame's three-pointer, but Kirchhoff answered with a three-pointer less than a minute later and Cortland never trailed again. Leading by three with 15:23 left in the game, the Red Dragons went on a 13-1 run over a five-minute span to take a 15-point lead and they led by at least 12 after that.
