WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (3-1, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 21st in the November 30 “D3hoops.com” pool, defeated Hope College (1-3), 70-65, on Friday, December 3 at the inaugural CCIW/MIAA Men’s Basketball Classic at Wheaton College’s King Arena in Wheaton, Ill. Wheaton (Ill., 5-0) edged Calvin College (4-3), 91-87 in overtime in Friday’s second contest. In Carthage’s win over Hope, the Redmen had an 11-point first-half lead, 23-12, at 10:07. The Flying Dutchmen closed to within one point at halftime, 31-30, and took an two-point lead, 33-31, in the opening moments of the second period. Carthage took the lead for good, 34-33, at 18:28 and led by as much as nine points, 46-37, at 14:07. The Redmen shot 41 percent for the game (24-58), while Hope shot 40 percent (24-60). Three Carthage players scored in double figures. Kevin Menard had 16 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Mark Morrison had 14 points on five-of-10 field goals, including four-of-five three pointers, and Trey Bowens added 13 points. Stephen Cramer topped the Flying Dutchmen with a game-high 19 points. On December 4, the Redmen take on Calvin at 1 p.m., with Wheaton (Ill.) playing Hope at 3 p.m.
