After seeing the basketball court in Alumni Gymnasium dedicated to former head coach Tom Bryant, the Centre College men's basketball team opened its 2004-05 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference season with a 77-65 win over Rhodes College, Friday, Dec. 3, in Danville, Ky.
Sophomore forward Matt Jacobson scored a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists to lead the Colonels. Jacobson made seven of his 13 shots, including four of nine from beyond the three-point arc.
Junior center Reggie Magnusson and junior forward Coy Zerhusen each posted double-doubles for Centre. Magnusson finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Zerhusen tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Matt Nestheide chipped in with 12 points and three assists.
Matthew Jakes scored 16 points to lead the Lynx. Joe Thompson scored 15 and Rami Almefty added 10 points in the loss. Rhodes falls to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the SCAC.
The first half was tightly contested with Rhodes taking the largest lead (23-16) with 5:19 left. Centre, however would then go on a 13-7 run to close the half and trim Rhodes' lead to 30-29 at halftime.
A Jacobson layup at the 17:31 mark in the second half gave Centre its first lead since the 8:04 mark in the first half.
The Colonels would then start to pull away with a 12-3 run to take a 10-point lead (45-35) with 14:09 remaining. Jacobson kocked down three of his four three pointers to score nine of those 12 points.
Rhodes would trim the lead to five (63-58) with five minutes left in the contest, but a Nestheide three pointer would push the lead back to eight and the Lynx would get no closer than six points the remainder of the game.
Centre, now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC, will return to action, Sunday, Dec. 5, when they host Hendrix College, in a SCAC contest. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
