University of New England 87, Daniel Webster 72

BIDDEFORD, Maine — Junior Matt McManus (Cumberland, R.I.) poured in a career-high 26 points to pace the University of New England in an 87-72 non-league victory over Daniel Webster College on Thursday evening at the Campus Center.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Nor'easters (3-1), who are off to their best start since the 1991-92 season.

Both teams traded baskets in the opening eight minutes before senior Nyaten Gaye (Providence, R.I.) hit a jumper to cap an 8-0 run, giving UNE a 23-19 lead with 10:39 remaining in the first half.

The Nor'easters, who never trailed again, took a 40-34 lead into the break, thanks in part to 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Eagles (1-4) closed to within one (46-45) less than three minutes into the final frame, but the Nor'easters responded with a 7-0 run to take command.

McManus was 8 of 14 from the field to record his career-best scoring output. Sophomore Tom Button (Lyndeborough, N.H.) grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to go with 10 points. Sophomore Nick Farynaz (Gray, Maine) added 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting for the winners, who open their Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule Saturday at Wentworth.

First-year forward Danny Ford (Exeter, N.H.) had 24 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for Daniel Webster, which hosts Emerson on Saturday. Classmate Josh Howe (Randolph, Vt.) pitched in with 18 points.
