Salem State 82, Plymouth State 80

SALEM, Mass. - — Seniors Ifesinachi Anosike (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Allen Reid (Southbridge, Mass.) combined for 57 points Thursday night, including some key baskets down the stretch as Salem State College nipped Plymouth State University, 82-80, in a non-conference men’s basketball game at the O’Keefe Center.

Reid hit a jumper from the corner with only eight seconds remaining and Anosike buried a free throw with four seconds left for the margin of victory and helped the Vikings remain undefeated on the season (5-0). Anosike finished with 33 points and nine rebounds, hitting 13 of his 17 shots, while Reid ended up with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including four three-pointers.

Senior guard Nick Pelotte (Bingham, Maine) led the Panthers with 26 points and five assists, scoring 10 points from the free throw line. Junior center Kevin Boutilier (North Andover, Mass.) contributed 18 points (9-of-18 from the field) and eight rebounds, and sophomore Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 14 points and nine boards. It was second-highest scoring game for Boutilier in his career, and the most since he scored 20 at Western Connecticut in January of 2003.

Plymouth State rallied from a 50-36 halftime deficit to take the lead in the final minute, but Anosike’s heroics saved the game for the Vikings, who finished 24-5 last season.

PSU, 2-3, opens Little East Conference play this Saturday in the home opener when Rhode Island College pays a visit to Foley Gymnasium for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. Salem State is home again Saturday against Babson (2:00 p.m.).
