Cal State-Hayward 124, Pacific Lutheran 109

REDLANDS, Calif. — Pacific Lutheran shot 60.8 percent from the field -- connecting on 45 or 74 attempts -- but lost to Cal State Hayward 124-109 in the first round of the Lee Fulmer Men's Basketball Tournament at the University of Redlands today.

The Lutes, now 1-4 overall, will meet the University of La Verne in the consolation bracket tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. La Verne (2-3) lost to Chapman today, 98-80.

The difference in today's game was Cal State Hayward's three-point shooting. In their first two games this season, the Pioneers had shot just 18.6 percent (11-59) from beyond the arc. Today they connected on 18 of 35 attempts -- 51.4 percent -- including 7 of 10 in the second half.

"The kids are playing hard," commented PLU head coach Dave Harshman. "We've just got to find a way to get over the hump."

Sudon DeSuze led the Lutes with 25 points, making 12 of his 15 attempts from the field. He also had a game-high 12 rebounds and a team-best 6 assists. John Stark connected on 7 of 8 attempts from the field en route to 17 points. Mike Torbenson had 13 points, Kurt Oliver 12 and Landon Heidenreich 10.

"Sudon had a great game," Harshman said. "Landon made his first start and it was astounding since they pressed us the whole game."

Brian Seaton poured in 36 points and Kenny Caraway 23 to lead the Pioneers.
