12/02/04- Coach Doug Davalos’s Lobo hoopsters improved their season and conference record to 4-0 and 3-0 after Thursday night’s 87-69 American Southwest Conference win over Austin College in Sherman.
The Lobos never lost the lead the entire outing although the ‘Roos pulled within 3 points trailing Sully 40-37 at the half.
Sid Hooper (Andrews) was the man of the night as he totaled 36 points going 14 of 20 from the field and hitting 8 of 12 jumpers from 3-point range. He was also lead assist man with five.
Other Lobos in double figures were Rick Herrera (Alamogordo, NM) with 13 points, Larry Reese (El Paso) with 12 and Derric Workman (Odessa) with 10 points. Herrera and Workman were perfect at the free throw line hitting 3 of 3 and 4 of 4 free throws respectively.
Justin Steward (Texico, NM) led Sul Ross in rebounds with 14, good for a season high. He also contributed 3 blocks and 2 steals to the victory.
As a team, the Lobos saw a vast improvement in 3-point shots hitting 55.6% of it’s 3-pointers for the game. Things were just as good from the charity stripe as Sully made 13 of its 17 total game free throws, good for 76.5%.
Sul Ross will conclude the second part of a two-game road stretch this weekend in Clarksville, Arkansas as they face the University of the Ozarks. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
