St. John's 81, Concordia-Moorhead 79

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — Saint John’s University freshman point guard Jon Kaus made a layup with 39 seconds remaining in the game to give the Johnnies the lead for good and defeat Concordia-Moorhead College 81-79 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Sexton Arena in Collegeville, Minn.

The Johnnies trailed from 3:26 left in the first half until 2:08 left in the game when sophomore point guard Matt Ohme made two free throws. Ohme led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Junior post Paul Henrichs had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore wing Zach Reif added 15 points, including three three-point baskets.

Concordia was led by senior forward Soren Nelson with 23 points. Junior forward Mark Dixon had 15 points, while junior guard Keith Eckhoff contributed 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Cobbers shot 58 percent from the field (29-of-50), while also making 7-of-12 three-point attempts. The Johnnies shot 54.5 percent from the field (30-of-55) and converted 16-of-22 free throw attempts. Both teams committed 19 turnovers.

SJU improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, while Concordia falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MIAC. The Johnnies will host St. Olaf on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m., while Concordia travels to Gustavus Adolphus for a 3 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, Dec. 4.
