Goucher 75, York (Pa.) 72

TOWSON, Md. — Garrett Smith and Jermaine Saunders combined to shoot 20-for-29 from the field in leading Goucher past York, 75-72, in a Capital Athletic Conference game tonight before a crowd of 244 in the Sports & Recreation Center.

Smith finished with a career-high 27 points, including the final three points of the contest. After York's Kenny Fass converted a pair of free throws with :48 remaining to create the 12th tie of the game at 72-72, the senior forward/center drove down the lane for a lay-up and was fouled. He completed the three-point play by hitting the free throw to provide the Gophers (2-1, 1-0 CAC) with a 75-72 lead.

The Spartans (5-1, 0-1 CAC) were unable to get a shot off in the final :32.

Saunders did most of his damage in the first half as his 15 points helped the Gophers assume a 42-38 lead at the break. He added four more points in the second half to boost his total for the game to 19, a new career-high for the senior guard.

Brad Zerfing, who was the leading scorer for York with 15 points, nailed a shot from three-point range with 3:17 remaining to put the Spartans ahead 68-67, but Jonathan Garritt answered with a three-pointer of his own at the other end to put Goucher back in the lead, 70-68.

A pair of free throws by York's Brandon Bushey knotted the score at 70-70 with 2:34 showing on the clock and neither team scored again until a lay-up by Garritt put the Gophers ahead, 72-70. Garritt finished with a season-high 17 points in the victory.

The Spartans out-rebounded the Gophers, 45-25, but were guilty of 22 turnovers.
