FDU-FLORHAM MEN’S BASKETBALL BEATS DELAWARE VALLEY, 95-65
MADISON, NJ – The College at Florham Devils scored the opening basket and led wire-to-wire as they beat Delaware Valley 95-65 in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams. The Devils are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom Conference. Delaware Valley drops to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Freedom.
The Devils built a 20-9 lead with 9:43 left in the first half. Just over five minutes later, the Devils lead had grown to 41-19. At that point, FDU was shooting 62.5 percent from the floor (15-for-24) and 50.0 percent on three-pointers (6-for-12). By comparison, Del Val struggled offensively, shooting 34.8 percent (8-for-23) from the floor. The Devils held a 21-8 edge in rebounds at that point.
For the game, FDU senior center Chris Hendershot (Vernon, NJ) scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior forward Jeff Hemschoot (Little Silver, NJ) added 15 markers and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Matt Cushing (Ocean, NJ) chipped in 12 points and junior guard Nate Lawrence (Willingboro, NJ) added 11 points.
Sopmore guards Frank Emslie (Hazlet, NJ) and Cody Chalmers (Middletown, NJ) each handed out five assists.
The Devils maintained their blistering shooting percentage, finishing the game at 60.7 percent from the floor (34-for-56) and at 45.5 percent from three-point range (10-for-22). FDU dominated the boards on the night, holding a 48-28 advantage.
For the Aggies, R.J. Callaway had a team-high 13 points. Maurice Slaughter and Orlon Baker each chipped in eight points. Five players tied for the team-lead in rebounds with three.
Poor foul shooting hurt Del Val, as they made just 19 of their 38 free throws (50.0 percent).
The Devils will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to play at Scranton for a 3:00 pm game.
