ERIE, Pa. — After shooting just 31 percent (15-of-48) from the field, the Waynesburg College women’s basketball team suffered a 67-43 season-opening loss to Penn State-Behrend, the host of the tip-off tournament. The Yellow Jackets committed 27 turnovers in the contest, which were converted into 24 points by the Lions.

PSU-Behrend jumped out to a 15-0 lead and forced 12 turnovers before senior guard Katie Lewandowski connected on a three-pointer with 12:02 left in the first half. Lewandowski helped the Yellow Jackets then cut the deficit to nine points, 17-8, as she scored all eight points.

However, the Lions countered with a 15-5 run of their own over the next seven-plus minutes, staking a 32-13 lead. PSU-Behrend took a 32-17 halftime lead after shooting 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets made just 25 percent (5-of-20) of their shots and committed 19 turnovers in the first half.

PSU-Behrend continued to increase its lead in the second half, taking a 41-19 lead in the first three minutes of the period. The Lions led by as many as 30 points (60-30, 7:15) in the second half before finishing with a 67-43 victory.

Twelve different PSU-Behrend players scored in the contest, including three in double figures. Brittany Mays led a trio of Lions in double figures with 14 points, including 12 in the first half.

Senior forward Denise Kennedy led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points. Lewandowski finished with nine points, while sophomore forward Michaelene Jones scored eight points and added a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive).
