MEADVILLE, Pa. — An opening 9-0 run put the Bethany College women’s basketball team in a deficit it wouldn’t recover from, as Ohio Northern University defeated the Bison 82-48 in the opening round of Allegheny College’s National City Tip-Off Tournament.

The loss drops BC into the consolation game against LaRoche College tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Redhawks were defeated by the host school 70-61 in the day’s opening game. Ohio Northern and Allegheny will face off in the title game at 3 p.m.

The Polar Bears scored the game’s first nine points, but it was still a 16-8 game at the 12:39 mark of the first half following a three-pointer by Bethany freshman Brooke Orange. The Polar Bears took control with a 16-2 run that swelled their advantage to 32-10 and they would carry a 44-23 lead into halftime.

ONU shot 58 percent (19-33) in the first half, while the Bison hit just 10-of-28 attempts from the floor and committed 12 turnovers.

Ohio Northern firmly secured the outcome with an 18-3 spurt that pushed their lead to 62-36 with just over six minutes gone from the second half.

A pair of freshmen paced Bethany’s scoring efforts Friday, as Nicole Thompson tossed in 10 points and added six assists and four steals in her first collegiate game. Fellow rookie Jen Scarborough fired in nine points, all in the second half.

For the Polar Bears, who also out-rebounded BC 50-25, Alisha Rinehart had 15 points off the bench and Danielle Andreasen notched 14.
