NEWBURGH, N.Y. — In a matchup between the top team in the Skyline and the second place team in the Skyline, the Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team defended their position at the top of the league with a convincing win over Farmingdale. The final score was 70-57.

The game started out with two very definitive runs. The Blue Knights opened up a 10-1 lead to start the game, a run that was promptly answered by an 8-0 streak by the Rams. The score flipped four times in the first half, but it was Mount Saint Mary that carried a four point lead into half time.

In the second half, the Mount gradually pulled away from Farmingdale, eventually increasing to ten with just over six minutes remaining. On the next possession, the Rams were called for an intentional foul, giving Mount Saint Mary two free throws and possession of the ball. Junior Vanessa Lawson (Kingston, NY) drained both free throws and then freshman Jessica Tice (Altamont, NY) drained a baseline jumper to give the Blue Knights a fourteen point lead and complete control of the game.

Lawson led all scorers in the game with 19 and also dished out 6 assists. Senior LaSheena Brown (Malverne, NY) played her best game in recent memory at the Kaplan Center, finishing with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Fellow senior Annie Cossolini (Fanwood, NJ) registered a game-high 7 assists to go along with her 8 points.

For the Rams, junior Mercedes Miller (New York, NY) led the way with 16 points. Junior Dankery Perez (New York, NY) and freshman Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, NY) both got to double figures, scoring 10 and 11 points respectively.

The win marks the eighth straight victory for Mount Saint Mary and they have yet to lose a game in calendar year 2007. They improved to 14-3 overall and stand at 7-1 in the Skyline. Farmingdale dropped to 12-5 overall and 8-3 in Skyline play.
