NEW LONDON, CONN. — Natalie Moyer had 32 points, 15 rebounds and five steals and she was one of three Coast Guard players to record double-doubles as the Bears closed out the first semester beating rival Merchant Marine 71-57 in a non-conference game. The loss by Merchant Marine was its first against a Division III team this season, as they drop to 5-2 overall.

Coast Guard dominated on the boards as they outrebounded Merchant Marine 63-34. Melissa Martinelli had 13 points and 16 rebounds while Corinne McCormack had 10 points on five-of-six shooting from the field and she tied a career-high grabbing 17 rebounds for the second straight game.

The Bears (5-4), who jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes, used a 13-4 spurt in the first half to open up a 35-21 lead with three minutes left. Coast Guard led 39-24 at the break.
Merchant Marine used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 41-32 with 15:11 left in the game, but the Bears responded as Katie Colella and Moyer hit back-to-back three-pointers in an 8-2 run as Coast Guard increased its lead to 49-34 with 13:40 left.
DeCarol Davis had a career-high 11 assists for Coast Guard.
Morgan Gartner led the Mariners with 19 points and eight rebounds while Brooke Picillo added 15 points and a game-high eight steals. Ashley Carlisle had 11 points, all in the first half for Merchant Marine.

With the win, Coast Guard evens the race for the Superintendent’s Trophy at 3-3. Coast Guard won in volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball while Merchant Marine has won this season in football, men’s soccer and sailing.
