NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The Merchant Marine Academy hung tight until the final minutes Saturday but it was Mount Saint Mary that came out on top, 71-61. The Blue Knights have now won fourteen games in a row since a late December loss to New York University.

The Mount jumped out to a sixteen point lead midway through the first half, but the Mariners cut the lead to seven at the half. The Mariners carried their strong play over into the second half and tied the game at 42 on a jumper from sophomore Hannah Eko (La Hara, CA). After trading free throws, sophomore Stephanie Waller (Brookfield, WI) gave the Mariners their only lead of the game, 45-44, at the 10:23 mark. Mount Saint Mary, spurred on by the strong play of freshman Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, NJ), roared back with a 9-0 run that gave them control of the game. USMMA would cut the lead back to three, but would never get any closer.

Junior Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, NY) had one of the better games of her career, scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior LaSheena Brown (Malverne, NY) was the leading scorer for the Blue Knights with 18. She also had 11 rebounds.

For the Mariners, sophomore Kristen Hesko (Killingworth, CT) led the way with 18 points, all by way of the three-point shot. Junior Morgan Gartner (Houston, TX) played well inside despite going up against Brown and Markert for much of the afternoon. She finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds.

For the Blue Knights, the win marks their twentieth win of the season. They now stand at 20-3 and 13-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Mariners three-game winning streak was halted as they drop to 9-14 overall and 6-8 in the Skyline. With only two games remaining, the Blue Knights remain at the top of the conference standings. They travel to Farmingdale on Wednesday before hosting their rival, Stevens, on Saturday.
