D'Youville 70, Lake Erie 63

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — It came down to the final game of the season for the first time in school history, but the Mount Saint Mary College women’s basketball team still found a way to win their eight consecutive regular-season Skyline Conference title. The Blue Knights defeated Stevens, 71-63.

Mount Saint Mary (21-4, 14-2 Skyline) was led by junior forward Jackie Markert (Voorheesville, NY), who had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center LaSheena Brown (Malverne, NY) finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Annie Cossolini (Fanwood, NJ) contributed 10 points.

The Blue Knights started quickly as they opened a 12-5 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Markert and Brown combined to score the first 12 points of the contest for the Mount. MSMC extended its lead to 10 points (21-11) midway through the first half as Markert converted a three-point play.

Trailing 26-16 with just over seven minutes to go in the half, Stevens went on a 9-0 run in less than two minutes to get to within 28-27. Freshman forward Brittany Fuller (East Rockaway, NY) knocked down two three-pointers in the spurt. MSMC carried a 35-31 lead into the locker room at the half as Markert, Brown and Cossolini combined to score 33 of their team’s 35 points. Junior forward Dora Enright (Longmont, CO) had 16 points at the half for Stevens.

Mount Saint Mary took control of the game by limiting the Ducks to just four points over the first 11:16 of the second half. Junior guard Chantel Anthony (Middletown, NY) scored on a lay-up with 8:44 remaining in the period to put the Blue Knights up 52-35. MSMC maintained a double-digit advantage until sophomore guard Dani Dudek (Rockaway, NJ) made a lay-up with 1:24 left to bring Stevens within 64-56.

Enright finished the afternoon with 22 points and six rebounds, while Fuller scored 19. Junior guard Jean Matusiak (Queens, NY) tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Dudek added 10 points and four rebounds.

For the game, the Ducks shot 34.4 percent (22-for-64) from the field. MSMC made 22 of 60 field-goal attempts (36.7 percent) in the contest. The Blue Knights were 24-for-26 from the foul line.

The loss was only the second in the last 13 games for the Ducks, who fell to 20-5 on the year. Mount Saint Mary improved to 21-4 on the season, 14-2 inside the Skyline Conference. The Blue Knights will open Skyline Tournament play on Tuesday at the Kaplan Center against Manhattanville.
