The Mount struggled early in the first half and City College scored the first six points of the game. Trailing 10-6 with just over thirteen minutes to go, the Blue Knights caught fire, going on a 25-4 run. Mount Saint Mary led 37-20 at the break. City College would only get as close as thirteen points in the second half and the Blue Knights cruised to a twenty-seven point victory.
Mount Saint Mary College senior Mike Hoyt (Florida, NY) entered the game needing only 12 points to reach 2,000 points for his career. The pre-season D3hoops.com All-American hit a free throw with 6:57 remaining in the first half to reach the milestone. Hoyt is the first player, male or female, to reach the two thousand point mark in Mount Saint Mary College history. He finished the game with 34 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds.
Hoyt finished last season averaging 27.2 points per game, good enough for third in the nation. In 2006-07, the senior is averaging 27.8 points per game, thanks in part to 109 points over his last three games.
Sophomore Matt Cunningham (Alpharetta, GA) had 9 points and 5 rebounds for the Mount. Fellow sophomore Chris Harrison (Baldwin, NY) added 4 points and 9 boards.
Senior guard James Boddie (Bronx, NY) led the way for the Beavers. He had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Taleek Norman (Bronx, NY) and Idris Agbaje (Brooklyn, NY) each had 11 points.
With the win, Mount Saint Mary College improves to 3-9 on the season and may have righted the ship just in time as they hit Skyline Conference play. City College drops to 5-8. The Blue Knights play next at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday, January 10. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
