NEW YORK — Senior center Jason Boone finished with 18 points and a season-high 19 rebounds as the New York University men’s basketball team recorded a 78-57 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.

Boone notched his 10th double-double for the Violets (17-5, 6-5 UAA), who are ranked #16 by D3hoops.com. Seniors Matt Basford and Michael DeCorso each netted 15 points for NYU.

Ryan Einwag led Carnegie Mellon (12-9, 5-6 UAA) with 12 points.

NYU started quick thanks to the hot hand of senior Matt Basford, who buried two three-pointers on the Violets’ first two trips down the floor, forcing Carnegie Mellon to call a timeout 55 seconds into the contest.

Meanwhile, Boone recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first half alone. The 6-6 senior scored six straight points during a 16-7 run that gave NYU a 42-22 halftime lead.

“We got off to a good start by hitting a lot of shots at the beginning of the game,” NYU head coach Joe Nesci said. “It was a good overall effort. It was a good bounceback from our tough loss to Rochester on Friday.”

NYU shot 43.8% (28-64) overall and outrebounded Carnegie Mellon 51-35. The Tartans hit just 34.4% (21-61) of its shots and converted just 45.5% (10-22) from the charity stripe.

NYU returns to action Friday, Feb. 16, when it travels to Case Western Reserve University for an 8 pm contest. The Violets defeated the Spartans 69-52 at the Coles Sports Center on Jan. 21 in the previous meeting between the UAA rivals.
