BRONX, N.Y. — Senior Dave Maggiacomo (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored a career-high 32 points and senior Rod Headley (Peekskill) hit the game-winning shot with five seconds remaining as Cortland opened its season with a 56-54 win over City College of New York. The game was played at Lehman College since CCNY’s gym is being renovated.

Headley scored only six points on 3-of-12 shooting, but his basket broke a 56-56 and gave the Red Dragons the lead for good. Cortland led 56-52 on a three-pointer by sophomore Carson Niehoff (West Islip) with 1:53 left, but Taleek Norman’s layups with 56 seconds and 10 seconds remaining tied the score. Following Headley’s basket, the Beavers went for the win but a three-pointer by James Boddie was off the mark in the final seconds.

Maggiacomo finished 11-of-20 from the floor, including 5-of-11 from behind the three-point arc. He also made 5-of-6 free throws. Headley led the Red Dragons with five rebounds and junior Joe Sargent (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta)
scored six points on 3-of-3 shooting.

Norman paced the Beavers (0-1) with 17 points and three assists. Jonathan Birriel scored 15 points off the bench
and Idris Agbaje led the team with eight rebounds.

Maggiacomo scored 21 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting as the Red Dragons took a 30-24 halftime lead. Cortland led 13-2 to start the game, with nine points from Maggiacomo. CCNY eventually got back to within 23-22 before allowing seven of the final nine points, all to Maggiacomo on a three-pointer and four free throws.

Cortland led 32-24 early in the second half, but CCNY rallied and eventually took a 39-36 lead on a Rajakh Ndoye
three-pointer with 14:01 left. The lead grew to 41-36 on a Boddie layup and was still at 48-44 on Boddie’s trey with 9:38 remaining.

The Red Dragons scored five straight points on a Niehoff jumper and a Maggiacomo three-pointer to grab a 49-48
lead with 8:40 left. Trailing 52-50, Cortland took the lead for good when Maggiacomo nailed a three-pointer with 5:54 on the clock. Neither team scored again until Niehoff’s three-pointer with less than two minutes left.
