New Jersey City University uncorked a 33-4 first half run and had a 36-1 margin in points off turnovers as the Gothic Knights snapped a six-game losing streak in decisive fashion, routing City College of New York, 77-21, in a non-conference game played at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU (3-8) led 37-10 at the half, and now leads the all-time series against CCNY (0-9), 10-4. The 56-point margin of victory marked the 17th time in the 36-year history of the women’s basketball program that NJCU has won a game by 50 or more, and the 50th time the Knights have won a contest by at least 30 points.
NJCU committed only eight turnovers in the entire game and had all 12 players in uniform score, while forcing the Beavers into 30 giveaways. NJCU had margins of 36-0 in bench scoring, 20-0 in fast-break points, 25-4 in second chance situations, and 42-14 in the paint. The Knights out-rebounded CCNY, 57-36, including 32-16 on the offensive glass. Every NJCU player logged at least eight minutes.
Junior forward ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) led all scorers with 16 points and four steals, while NJCU senior point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) poured in 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting, adding three assists and two steals. McNair now has 980 career points, 20 shy of becoming the eighth player in school history to join the 1,000-point club. Her two steals gives her 404 in her career, as she moved into a tie for 17th place in NCAA Division III history in swipes.
NJCU received 11 rebounds and eight points in 11 minutes from sophomore center KELLY WILSON (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson County Prep). All 11 of her rebounds, including 10 offensive caroms, came in the first half. Junior forward TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) had eight points (4-6 FG), eight rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes, while freshman point guard JERICA HAYES (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added eight points and three assists, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, in 13 reserve minutes. Freshman guard JASMINE GADSDEN (Orange, NJ/Orange) chipped in a career-high seven boards.
CCNY’s top scorer was sophomore forward Johanna Ortiz (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) with six points, adding team highs of eight rebounds and four blocks.
NJCU shot 41.4 percent overall, while the Beavers struggled in each half, finishing at 15.6 percent (7-45).
With the game tied 4-4 at 15:57, NJCU went on a 33-4 run to close the half as CCNY went a span of 15:51 without converting a field goal, missing 15 straight. The Beavers shot 15.8 percent (3-19) in the first half. Leading 16-7 at 10:08, the Knights pulled in front 33-7 by virtue of a 17-0 run, and finished the period on a 21-3 spurt.
NJCU ran the streak to 39-6 with a 43-12 lead, and 59-10 when they held a 63-14 margin with 6:43 remaining. NJCU’s final 56-point margin marked its largest lead of the night.
NJCU will return to action on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at 7 p.m. with a home non-conference game against Briarcliffe College at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
