ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Six players contributed to a 16-2 run midway through the second half that carried the University of Rochester to a 69-59 victory over Brandeis University at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

The Yellowjackets improved to 10-0 overall, 2-0 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester is ranked third nationally in the D3hoops.com poll and fourth in the WBCA/ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. Brandeis is 9-1 overall, 0-1 UAA. The Judges are ranked seventh by D3hoops.com and eighth by the coaches.

Rochester was nursing a four point lead, 43-39, with 13:28 to play when Alex Porter made one free throw. Helen Baroody sank a three-pointer, then assisted on a layup by Emily Bango. Julie Marriott made a layup to extend the lead to 51-39 before Jaime Capra sank two free throws for Brandeis. The Yellowjackets answered with a layup from Emily Lyons, a jumper by Megan Krebbeks, and two free throws apiece by Bango and Johanna McNelis. Rochester led, 59-41, with 5:41 left.

Jessica Waddell and Marriott led the Yellowjackets with 12 points each. Porter added 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals in 21 minutes off the bench. Bango had nine points, seven assists, and four steals. Baroody scored eight points, blocked three shots, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Capra led the Judges with 14 points. Caitlin Malcolm scored 13 points. She had three assists, three blocked shots, and five steals. Jessica Chapin scored nine points.

Brandeis built a four point lead twice in the first half, the last time on Capra’s three pointer with 13:16 to play (15-11). A jumper by Lyons and a three-point goal from Baroody started the Yellowjackets on an 11-3 run over the next 4:45 to push Rochester in front, 22-18. A layup from Baroody and two more by Porter gave Rochester its largest first half lead at 30-24 with 1:08 to play. Chapin drilled a three-pointer with 0:39 left, then sank one free throw with 18 seconds left. It was 30-28 Rochester at the break.

The Judges tied the score twice in the early minutes of the second half. Jumpers from Marriott and Waddell put the Yellowjackets ahead for good and the crucial surge followed minutes later.
