Mike Chmielowiec led the way with 16 points. He added four assists and six rebounds in 35 minutes. Jon Onyiriuka had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, one block, and two steals. Tim Brackney scored 12 with three assists. Rob Dominiak, Eric Snider, and Jeff Juron had 11 apiece. Snider’s total is a career high. Juron had five assists. Uche Ndubizu scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Spiros Ferderigos scored 16 points for Emory, added seven assists, and three steals. Adrian Sosa and Johnny Pinto scored 15 apiece. The Eagles shot 50% from the floor (26 of 52) and 50% outside the arc (8 of 16). Sosa and Pinto sank three treys apiece. Ferderigos had a pair.
Each team was sharp at the foul line as well. Emory sank 15 of 18 from the stripe. Rochester made 26 of 34, 8 of 12 in the last 90 seconds when Emory was forced to foul.
Rochester improved to 13-5 overall, 4-3 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets are tied for third place with Carnegie Mellon. Emory is 7-10 overall, 1-6 in the UAA. The teams play again in six days in Atlanta.
This one was close all the way. Brandon Rowlett scored four points in an 8-0 run that put Emory ahead, 17-10. The lead peaked at eight, the last time at 35-27, on a pair of free throws by Ferderigos with 5:20 to play.
Rochester went on an 11-2 run. Brackney sank two treys in the spurt, Snider made a pair of free throws, and Juron put the Yellowjackets ahead for the first time since the early minutes when he hit a three-pointer from the right sideline for a 38-37 lead at 2:24. Emory eventually pushed ahead, 41-39, on Sosa’s three-pointer from straight on in the last minute. Snider scored five in a row to put the Yellowjackets ahead: he made a conventional three-point play with 42 seconds left, then banked in a layup from the right block just before the halftime buzzer. It was 44-41 Rochester at the break.
In the second half, Rochester’s lead grew to seven, but Emory parried through its three-point shooting. Sosa made one and Pinto another around Chmielowiec’s three-pointer for a 63-62 Emory lead with 7:47 to play.
Rochester answered with 11 straight: layups by Ndubizu and Onyiriuka off the other’s pass, one free throw by Ndubizu, two free throws by Chmielowiec, and a four-point play by Chmielowiec for a 73-63 lead with 3:46 left.
