ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Tim Brackney scored 17 points to lead a balanced attack as host University of Rochester defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 72-60, at the Louis Alexander Palestra here today.

Mike Chmielowiec scored 16 points for Rochester. Jon Onyiriuka had 13 points and Uche Ndubizu contributed 11. Rochester finished the regular season at 18-7, 9-5 in the University Athletic Association.

Brad Matta scored a career high 22 points for Carnegie Mellon. Ryan Einwag added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Tartans. CMU finished 12-12 overall, 5-9 in the UAA.

Fueled by five points from Geoff Kozak and four from Matta, the Tartans broke out to an early 13-3 lead in the first 4:33. A jumper by Corey O’Rourke put CMU up, 23-15, with 8:21 left in the half.

Rochester went on an extended 17-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 32-25 lead with 3:20 to go. Brackney scored five points and the Yellowjackets hit eight free throws – four of four by Ndubizu. It was 38-33 at the half.

Carnegie struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the second half, hitting just seven of 23 from the floor (30.4%). Einwag scored nine of his 13 after intermission. Rochester hit 11 of 22 from the field in the second half.

For CMU, Kozak finished with six points, three assists, and one steal. Jack Anderson had nine points, six rebounds, and two steals.

Brackney hit six of 10 from the floor, four of seven three-point tries. Chmielowiec hit six of nine field goals, three of five outside the arc.

The Yellowjackets will wait to see if they secure one of the 18 at-large (Pool C) bids to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The tournament field will be announced on Sunday evening.
