All 10 Violets who played scored for NYU (19-2, 8-2 UAA), ranked #8 by ESPN/USA Today and #11 by D3hoops.com.
The victory over Rochester (18-3, 7-3) kept NYU in a first-place tie atop the University Athletic Association standings with Washington University, while knocking the Yellowjackets one game back.
NYU’s last four victories have come against UAA rivals who are ranked, including two wins over the University of Chicago, Washington University, and now a Rochester squad that is ranked #6 in both nationally recognized polls.
McEntee helped NYU pull away in the second half, scoring seven of her 16 points during a 25-5 spurt that turned a 29-27 Violet lead into a 54-32 advantage with 9:22 remaining following a lay-up by freshman Grace Carmen.
Carmen tallied a career-high 13 points on 5-6 shooting, as NYU shot 52.8% (19-36) after intermission and 43.2% (29-66) overall. McEntee, Carmen and senior forward Stephanie Ryba (11 points) helped the Violets own a 44-26 edge on points in the paint over the Yellowjackets.
Conversely, Rochester shot just 28.6% (18-63) overall despite getting strong games from Danielle Muller (18 points, 8-9 FT) and Alex Porter (10 points, 14 rebounds). Porter notched her fourth double-double of the season and 12th of her career.
NYU pulled away after both teams struggled to find their shooting form in the opening half – the Violets hit 33.3% (10-30) and went just 1-9 beyond the three-point arc, while Rochester was 25.7% (9-35) on its attempts and 3-9 from long range.
Both squads traded runs after a slugging start. NYU trailed 6-2, but went on an 11-0 run as five different players scored to seize a 13-6 lead. Rochester countered with an 11-3 outburst to go up 22-21. However, the Violets answered last – and right before the halftime buzzer – when Ryba swished a three-pointer off a feed from Rochetti to give her team a 25-23 lead going into the locker room.
NYU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 11, when it hosts UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University at 2 pm. The Violets scored a 72-50 victory over the Tartans in the other meeting between the teams on Jan. 5 in Pittsburgh.
