The game also marked the end of Burt Beagle\'s famous streak of working 930 consecutive games as a statistician for the men\'s basketball team. The streak started in November of 1969, when Richard Nixon was President of the United States and the New York Jets won Superbowl III.
It ended this evening as a result of Beagle\'s inability to attend due to health issues. Beagle, an avid supporter of Baruch Athletics, would have enjoyed working tonight\'s season-opening victory.
The game was tightly contested with Baruch holding a four-point lead (28-24) at halftime, but the Bearcats stormed out of the locker room with a 13-4 run to build a 41-28 lead with 13:27 left.
The big run was highlighted on a pair of shots from senior guard Carl Emengo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Canarsie) and sophomore forward George Kunkel (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
Freshman point guard Jeffrey Leider (Las Vegas, Nev,/Cheyenne) also hit a three-pointer during the game-busting run. Leider had a solid collegiate debut and finished with 16 points, five assists, and two steals.
The Bearcats (1-0) increased the lead at one point to 18 points (55-37) with 7:09 left, but Yeshiva (1-2) put together a minor rally to only get as close as nine points (68-59) with 1:12 left.
The Bearcats shot 49% (26-53) from the field, and out-rebounded the Maccabees by a 43-30 margin.
Kunkel led all scorers with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Emengo had 11 points and six assists.
Junior center Phil Schatz (Middle Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) had the finest game of his career by starting and scoring 13 points and nine rebounds.
Laurence Smith (Harlem, N.Y./Frederick D)ouglass) was also a big factor with 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Yeshiva, which struggled shooting 37.3% (22-59), were led in the yearly rivalry again by senior guard Ian Ribald (Yavneh Academy/Dallas, TX) with 19 points.
The Bearcats will next return to action next Tuesday, November 28, with a non-conference road game at Polytechnic. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
