Kalamazoo 89, Albion 82

SCHENECTADY, NY — Sophomore guard Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY/Smithtown) scored a career high 22 points and fellow sophomore guard Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) also hit for a career high with 17 points as Union College defeated New York City Tech, 90-65 at the Viniar Athletic Center Monday night. The Dutchmen won their season opener while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-3 after this non-league contest.

Junior center Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) had a game high 11 rebounds, all on the defensive boards, for the Dutchmen. Senior captain Joe Mackey (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) added 12 points and led all players with six assists. Desmarais made eight of 10 free throws and hit seven of his eight shots from the floor.

Sophomore guard Jamal Hall (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker) led all players with 27 points for the Yellow Jackets, while Kareem Hanley (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) scored 11 and Otis Saylee (New York, NY/Seward Park) had 10 points for New York City Tech.

The Dutchmen never trailed in the contest and led by as many as 23 in the first half before taking a 42-22 lead into the break. Union had leads as high of 35 twice, including 65-30 with 13:09 remaining. All 13 players on the Union roster saw action in this season opener. Union shot 60% in the first half and 54% for the game, while holding the Yellow Jackets to 31% shooting for the night.

Union will play at Lasell Wednesday night at 7 p.m. before returning home to face Middlebury Saturday at 4 p.m. New York City Tech hosts Ramapo Thursday night at 6 p.m.
