After struggling mightily in shooting on Friday, the Eagles found the Ericksen Center rims to be much friendlier on Saturday, particularly in the opening half. Northwestern connected on 13-of-19 (68.4%) from the field in the first half and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line. Though they cooled down a bit from the floor in the second twenty minutes of play, the Eagles made up for it at the charity stripe, sinking 12-of-15 attempts in the half and 21-of-26 (80.8%) for the game.
Judson College built a 17-to-6 lead just 5 minutes into the game and increased their advantage to as many as 15 points at 33-to-18 with 9:06 to go in the period. Northwestern then punched back, finishing the half on a 22-to-11 run and whittling their deficit to 4 points in a score of 44-to-40 at the midway point.
The opening stages of the second half featured both teams trading baskets and modest runs as the scored was tied for the fourth time in the half at 54-to-54 with just under 13 minutes left on the clock. From there, Judson slowly began to create some space and lead 70-to-62 with 6:38 remaining. From there, the closest the Eagles were able to get was 5 points as Judson held on in the final minutes to finish off the 76-71 victory.
For the second straight game, senior Jen Adamson (Fargo, N.D./Oak Grove) led the Eagles, dropping in a new career-high 29 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field. Her 29 points was the most points scored in a game for the Northwestern women’s basketball program since Jessica Emmert boasted 34 points in the 2002-2003 season at the University of Sioux Falls. Adamson was recognized as Northwestern’s lone all-tournament honoree for her efforts. Jen also pulled down 9 rebounds. Eagle senior Julie Ross (New Hope, Minn./Cooper High School) produced her usual great all-around game, owning 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 9 assists, while senior Aimee Lind (Rib Lake, Minn.) aided with 9 points.
For Judson College, all-tournament selection Sara Brendemuehl (Cottage Grove, Wis./Abundant Life Christian) put in a team-high 22 points. Tissanie Simmons (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) joined her in double-figures with 13 points, along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals. Judson boasted a 19-0 advantage in second-half points as they capitalized on their 16 offensive rebounds.
Northwestern College is now 5-4 all-time against Judson College and 2-2 at home. The Eagles will look to pick up their first win of the season on Tuesday, November 21st, traveling to Menomonie, Wisconsin, to tangle with the University of Wisconsin-Stout at 7 p.m.
