SCHENECTADY, NY — Bela Vonnak scored 20 points with 11 rebounds, senior guard Matt Blue also scored 20 points and three other players hit for double figures to lead St. Lawrence to an 86-73 Liberty League men's basketball victory at Union Friday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.

The Saints improved to 19-5 overall and 9-4 in the Liberty, while the Dutchmen fell to 10-13 and 7-6. Yet Union remained in fourth place, ahead of RPI and Hobart (who both have seven losses) entering the final regular season day. The top four teams will compete in next weekend's league tournament.

Union had four players score in double figures, led by freshman forward Brendan Rose (Bristow, VA/Notre Dame Academy). Rose scored a team high 17 points off the bench for the Dutchmen. Sophomore guard Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) scored 16 for Union. Sophomore forward Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY/Smithtown) had 11 with four assists and junior center Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) had 10 with three assists.

Richard Wiliams scored 17 points and Tom Wopperer scored 13 while Josh Sharlow added 10 with four assists for St. Lawrence.

Union led 44-41 at halftime but St. Lawrence went on a 15-1 run in the first 7:29 of the second stanza for a 65-54 advantage. The largest lead for the visitors was at 16, (70-66 with 6:14 remaining).

The Saints shot 45% for the night, including 52% for the second half. Union shot 42% for the game, and was outrebounded 43-35.

The Dutchmen close out the regular season Saturday at home against Clarkson at 4 p.m. Saturday features "NCAA Take a Kid to the Game Day," as kids will receive autographs and giveaways while the game features free admission to all.
