Vassar (1-3) will play its next two games at the Athletics & Fitness Center as host of the Mid Hudson Shootout. The two-time defending champion Brewers face SUNY New Paltz on November 28 at 8:00 pm. Bard and Mt. St. Mary square off in the opening game at 6:00 pm. Shootout play continues on Wednesday with the consolation and championship games taking place at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
For Vassar, sophomore Brian Butterworth (Hamilton, Mass.) led the Brewers with 20 points, while junior Tyson Brazell (Salt Lake City, UT) tallied 12 points, going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and added eight rebounds.
The Valiants jumped out to a quick six point lead just four minutes into the contest before Vassar would tie the game at 8-8 with 15:20 to play. Manhattanville struggled from the floor shooting only 42 percent in the first half. The Valiants biggest lead of the half was six points when they led 14-8. The Brewers hung tough and took their first lead of the game with just over four minutes to play in the half as they jumped ahead 22-21 when sophomore Lenny Holt (Watertown, Mass.) contributed his two points.
Vassar would lead by four but the Valiants were able to end the half on a 6-0 run to grab the lead 29-27 at half.
In the second half, Vassar junior Lawrence Avitabile (Southington, Conn.) would tie the game on a jumper but Manhattanville junior Donte Chisolm (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) would add two of his 10 points to give Manhattanville the lead for good.
The Valiants would go on a 23-10 run to gain their biggest lead of the game of 13 points and make the score 52-39. Vassar would not quit and they continued to fight back cutting Manhattanville\'s lead to two, 62-60 with 4:42 to play.
DiBetta would sink a jumper and then Fink would drain a three to put the game out of reach for the Brewers. Fink went 2-for-5 from behind the arc.
The Valiants shot 52 percent from the floor but the key for Manhattanville was scoring 23 points off of turnovers, while the Brewers tallied 10 points off miscues.
Defensively, Manhattanville held the Brewers to 46 percent shooting from the floor and forced 17 Vassar turnovers. Infractions were plentiful between both clubs as 43 personal fouls were called in the contest.
In victory Manhattanville (3-1) was led by junior forward Brian Fink (Queens, N.Y.) who had 21 points to go along with three rebounds. Junior Cody Moffett (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 18 points, four rebounds and a game high five steals, while senior John DiBetta (Valhalla, N.Y.) added 13 points as the Valiants extended their winning streak to three games.
