The victory, Vassar's third in four Liberty League games, puts the Brewers at 9-4, 3-1 with an away game against Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm. The win also puts Vassar into a three-way tie along with Hamilton and Union atop Liberty League standings. The loss drops St. Lawrence to 12-3, 2-2.
With just two and a half seconds left in overtime, Butterworh sank the shot that sank the St. Lawrence. It had been a stagnent period of overtime play, as both teams combined for just eight points.
Unfortunately for the Saints, the Brewers accounted for six of those points. St. Lawerence's only overtime points came when sophomore forward Tom Wopperer sliced through the lane for a lay-up that tied the game at 70 with four minutes left in the extra period. St. Lawrence went scoreless for the rest of the overtime and got outrebounded 7-4.
St. Lawrence appeared to have the game in control in the first half leading 36-25 at intermission. The Brewers however, crawled back into the contest halfway through the second period. Vassar engineered a 19-5 run over eight and a half minutes to take their first lead of the game, a 55-54 advantage with seven and a half minutes left in the game.
After trading baskets over the next six minutes, senior guard Matt Blue hit a shot with 1:45 left in the game to put the Saints up 67-64. Vassar responded, as William Kieffer layed one in to pull Vassar within a 67-66 margin. With 57 seconds remaining, St. Lawrence sophomore forward Bela Vonnak went to the foul line with an opportunity to give the Saints a three point cushion, but hit just one of his two shots. Trailing by two points, the Brewers got the ball back and forward Lawrence Avitabile powered up a shot in the paint to tie the game at 68 and send the contest into overtime.
